Chapter 20

Sara laid out her thinking to Sean. “Juliana, from the bowling alley, described Arlene’s nails as ‘fancy-like’ and pointed out mine.”

“You always have pretty nails.” Sean leaned his head against the back of the chair and rolled his head to look over at her.

“Why thank you.”

“Yeah.” He took a healthy gulp of his wine.

She continued. “Women who get their nails done by an aesthetician usually find one they love and return repeatedly.”

“Ah, that improves the odds of these salons knowing this Arlene lady.”

“Hopefully. And a last name would be nice. Now, Juliana also mentioned that Arlene’s hair had shine and bounce like it had recently seen the hands of a stylist. So we visit the salons in the city that offer both services—hair and nails—and we might get somewhere, today even.” She had three locations in mind to try, and she and Sean were pushing against the clock. It was going on five, and most of these places closed at six on Saturdays and weren’t open on Sundays. That left them one hour to see through her hunch.

“Your idea is certainly worth a try. But my costume is at home.” He knocked back the rest of his wine.

“Let’s just hope we won’t be needing them, and I’ll drive.” She pointed to his empty glass; she’d only had a few sips.

“Sounds like a good idea.”

Sara quickly vacuumed the front seat of her car. “There,” she said, standing back, “hair-free.”

“Let me be the judge of that.” Sean leaned in and did a fast inspection. “I wouldn’t say hair-free.”

“Well, it’s as good as it’s getting for now. Get in.” She put the vacuum back in the house and loaded into her Bug with Sean.

She drove them to the first place, called Beauty Becomes Her. “You might want to stay in the car. The women in there might eat you alive.”

“I’ll take the risk. But how are we handling this?”

Her bait worked. They got out of the car, and she had their ruse sorted out. The way Sara saw it, if the women liked Sean, they’d want to help him. She spun, putting a hand on his chest. “I have an idea.”

“Another one? You’re on a roll.”

“Is that supposed to be a bowling joke?”

He shrugged, smirked. “It works.”

“It does, but just thinking, instead of us going in there and just asking if they know an Arlene—which might shut them down and get us nowhere—you could be some romantic fool.”

He laughed. “Not sure…”

“No, it would be perfect.” She snapped her fingers, pointed at him. “You say that you met this incredible woman at a coffee shop. She gave you her number, but your phone fell into the toilet and—”

Sean held his hand up. “Yuck. Why the toilet?”

“Okay… the… the… How about it slipped out of your pocket and went down a city grate? Like the ones in the street?”

“From a toilet to the sewer, not much better. But at least it doesn’t have me taking the phone in with me while I do my business.
